Overview
Important

A homothety with center OO and scale factor kk maps any point PP to a point PP' such that OO, PP, and PP' are collinear, and OP=kOPOP' = k \cdot OP. If k>0k > 0, PP' is on the same side of OO as PP; if k<0k < 0, PP' is on the opposite side.

Important properties

  • Homothety preserves the shape of figures (similarity).

  • Lengths are multiplied by k|k|; angles remain unchanged.

  • Lines map to parallel lines (unless they pass through the center).

  • The center of homothety is a fixed point.
