Midline of a trapezium

Overview
Important

Given a trapezium ABCDABCD with ABAB and CDCD as the parallel sides, let EE and FF be the midpoints of the non-parallel sides ADAD and BCBC, respectively. The segment EFEF is called the midline (or median) of the trapezium.

Important properties

  • The midline EFEF is parallel to the bases ABAB and CDCD.

  • The length of the midline is the average of the lengths of the two bases: EF=AB+CD2EF = \frac{AB + CD}{2}
