Properties of sections
Overview
Important
A section (or cross-section) of a solid is the intersection of the solid with a plane. The properties of the section depend on the solid and the orientation and position of the cutting plane.
Important properties
-
The section is always a plane figure (2D shape).
-
The shape and size of the section depend on the angle and position of the cutting plane.
-
Sections can be congruent or similar to faces of the solid, or they can be different shapes.
-
For some solids, certain sections have special properties (e.g., a section of a sphere is always a circle).
