Overview
Important

A cone is a three-dimensional geometric figure formed by connecting all points on a base (usually a circle or another simple closed curve) to a single point called the apex. If the apex is not aligned above the center of the base, the cone is called oblique. If the base is not a circle, the cone is called a generalized or elliptical cone.

Important properties

  • The axis of a cone is the line joining the apex to the center of the base.

  • A right cone has its axis perpendicular to the base; an oblique cone does not.

  • The base can be any simple closed curve, not just a circle.

  • The volume of a cone with base area BB and height hh is V=13BhV = \frac{1}{3}Bh.

  • For oblique cones, the formula for volume remains the same as long as hh is the perpendicular height.
