Similar figures
Overview
Important
Two figures are similar if one can be obtained from the other by a sequence of similarity transformations: translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations (resizing). For polygons, this means their corresponding angles are equal and their corresponding sides are in proportion.
Important properties
-
Corresponding angles of similar figures are equal.
-
Corresponding sides of similar figures are in the same ratio (called the scale factor).
-
All congruent figures are also similar (with scale factor 1).
-
Similarity preserves shape but not necessarily size.
