Area ratios
Overview
Important
The area ratio of two plane figures is the quotient of their areas. For polygons, this can be calculated directly using area formulas. Area ratios are especially useful when comparing figures with proportional sides or similar shapes.
Important properties
-
If two figures are congruent, their area ratio is 1.
-
For similar figures, the area ratio equals the square of the ratio of corresponding side lengths.
-
Area ratios can be used to solve problems involving partitions, scaling, and overlapping regions.
