Motion problems
Overview
Important
Motion problems involve objects moving at constant or varying speeds. The core relationship is , where is distance, is speed (velocity), and is time. Problems may involve one or more moving objects, and may require setting up and solving equations.
Important properties
-
If two objects move toward each other, their relative speed is the sum of their speeds.
-
If two objects move in the same direction, their relative speed is the difference of their speeds.
-
For round-trip or catch-up problems, set up equations for each part and use the total time or distance.
-
Units must be consistent (e.g., all speeds in km/h, all times in hours).
