Absolute value (other)

Overview
Important

Absolute value can be applied to expressions, not just single numbers. For example, xa|x - a| measures the distance between xx and aa on the number line. Absolute value is also used in inequalities, such as x3<2|x - 3| < 2, which describes all xx within 2 units of 3.

Important properties

  • ab=ba|a - b| = |b - a| (distance is always non-negative and order doesn't matter)

  • xa<r|x - a| < r means ar<x<a+ra - r < x < a + r

  • xa>r|x - a| > r means x<arx < a - r or x>a+rx > a + r
